TwiFic Guide to Not Reading Crap...

Remember the first time you realized that there was life after the steaming pile of Breaking Dawn? Regardless of how you found out about TwiFic or when in the timeline of the Twilight fanfic fandom's crazy-ass spontaneous generation you started reading, everyone, at one time or another, has fic-dived. (Def: Fanfiction equivalent of dumpster diving to look for something you hope will be a gem but usually ends up being...well, trash.)

I did a LOT of fic-diving before I discovered the amazing community of readers/writers/h00rs/twat waffles/tweeters who have created this amazing network of awesomeness that now is so good at rec'ing and communicating that I need not look further than my twitter feed for the next best rec. I fact, this fandom has been so good and rec'ing the fabulous and weeding out the crap that my TBR (def: To Be Read) list is SERIOUSLY out of control. (That may also have something to do with the fact that I'm the slowest reader in the fandom...)

So, I'm going to START my little list of recs here, as well as my list of favorite blogs, and a helpful dictionary of random acronyms and fic-specific words that it took me forever to figure out because I'm not hip, cool, or in any way with-it. In that same vein, I will try to define every shortcut I use (hence the "Def" references above.)

This is in no way an all-encompassing list of my favorites, or even my favorites “starter” fics. Consider this an amuse-bouche – there is so, so much more to come, and this is just a little mélange of taste to get you started out. And the point of this little post (or series thereof that may come) is to put together a list for some newbies to start out with. My next post will me a little more of a deviation in the Alternate Universe (def below) realm, but in the meantime, PLEASE comment and post your favorite starter fics? I’m so interested to see what people would suggest for newbies to the fandom.

So, without further ado, let's get GOING:

TwiFic Dic(tionary):

TwiFic = Twilight Fanfiction. There are many different types of fanfiction, for almost every fandom out there.

TwiH00r = Twilight fanfiction addict who may or may not be obsessed with Robert Pattinson and/or Jackson Rathbone and/or Peter Facinelli and/or Kellan Lutz. Personally, I’d like to be part of a Rob/Jackson/Peter sandwich.

Canon = Written in the same vein as Twilight, meaning characters act as they should in the same situation as those in the books (and they are vampires)

OOC = Out of Character (example: An Edward fic that's OOC would mean he's in it, but he deoesn't act like the Edward SM wrote). (SM Def = Stephanie Meyer)

AU = Alternate Universe (characters may or may not act as they should, but the situations are different

AH = All-Human; self-explanatory (they aren't vampires)

Angst = it's not all fluffy and happy and lovey-dovey, but most of the best fics, in my opinion, are listed as angst. I've yet to read one without a happy ending. There may have been one, but I founced halfway through for other reasons.

Flounce = to give up on a fic for whatever reason - sometimes a fickle reason, sometimes not.



Rec's: Starting Out
Let's start out with what we all went looking for: fix that goddamn fade-to-black chapter. There were a lot of really baaaaaad fics that attempted to fix it. And then there were some fan-fucking-tastic ones. These are canon but with a twist. My list below:

Fic: Let Your Light Shine

** Unfortunately, she pulled her fic (not sure why), but you can download it on iTunes on iFic. SO worth it. Such a great way to get your first hit of TwiFic. Just be warned: it is an addiction.

Fic: Edward’s Breaking Dawn

Fic: Heatwave

** This was the very first good fic I ever read. I was so freaking amazed I found it I wanted to shout it from the mountain tops. I kinda feel about it like one does their first boyfriend. Nuff said.

Rec’s: Moving On (Time for a Little AU)
Now that we’ve satiated the immediate need to have that fade to black from BD (Def: Breaking Dawn) fixed, it’s time to experiment a little – give our characters a little room outside the canon box to breathe so they can stretch their vampy wings a bit…

Fic: An Abridged Account

** This is a lovely little work in progress fic that features vampy Edward and a Bella who finds herself finally comfortable in her skin.

Fic: Osa Bella

**JFC (Def: Jesus Fucking Christ), this fic is so fantastic, it'll make your insides hurt. There's vampy Edward, Bella in her 30's, a little bit angsty, but you can't go wrong with this fic. Seriously. It's on FF.net (www.fanfiction.net) here or on TWITARDED here. I prefer the post on TWITARDED (which is SO out of character for me, usually I ONLY read on FF.net because of the ease-of-use, easy layout for reading, easy way to track favorites and alerts, etc.) because the author posted each chapter there with a long, detailed author's note that made each posting really special.

Fic: The List

**I loved this fic so, so, so much when I read it, and her Carlisle inspired me to write.

Flagship Post!

Sooooo....I broke down (JESUS! Twice in one month! First Twitter and now this!!) and created a blog. Ever since FaceBook showed up I said, "This is it! This is the last method of communication I am adding to my aresnal. I don't need to be ANY MORE CONNECTED."

And then FUCK! Twitter happened. I mean, I tried to stay away, but ugh, I just caved. And now THIS! Honestly, it really is for the SOLE PURPOSE of having somewhere to put my NEW BANNER that KnittyKitty (my beloved beta) created for The Hummer!!! Because it is beautiful and perfect and she made it just for me...and I am so lucky because she is awesome and fantastic and puts up with my bullshit even when I'm being ridiculous.
